Culture

Kumano has a rich culture and heritage going back thousands of years. From the legend of Jofuku, or Xifu in Chinese, who came to Kumano in search of the elixir of immortality to the legend of Ragyo Shonin, a Brahman monk who came and founded what is today the Buddhist temple called Seigantoji.

Kumano is also famous as a spiritual pilgrimage destination and one of the key areas for the practice of Shugendo, a kind of Buddhist/Shinto mountain asceticism.
