The people of Kumano celebrate many ancient festivals and ceremonies that go back to ancient times. One of the most famous local festival is the Shingu Fire Festival. It is over 1400 years old and held on Feb 6th every year. On this day many practice ‘misogi ‘ or purification rites before entering the sacred precincts of the Kamikura Shrine to join with over 2000 other men and boys who then light up the mountain and then run down the steeps steps to the waiting onlookers below.
There is also the Himatsuri, another fire festival that is held at the Nachi Grand Shrine in July of every year.
