Up the Dorokyo Gorge Part 1

Join us in a trip up the Dorokyo Gorge. Ideally, you want to take this trip for real. But, until then this little video will give you a sense of what it would be like. Normally people take the jet boat tour. But, if you drive up the river you will find a little village that gives you tours in a small river boat. I have done both and prefer the small boat tour. Dorokyo Gorge is a beautiful and secluded gorge deep in the mountains of Kumano.

As you make your way up the gorge you will glimpse steep cliffs, ancient majestic forests, and many unique rock formations which have interesting names to describe them. The pristine emerald green waters of the Kitayamagawa River are a huge attraction for nature lovers from all over Japan and the world.

The gorge is located in Yoshino-Kumano National Park and is situated along the borders of Wakayama, Nara and Mie prefectures. The best times to visit the Dorokyo are in the spring, when the mountain cherry trees, azalea and rhododendron are in full bloom or in the autumn when you can enjoy the rich colours of the autumn leaves.
